Woman paraded naked in Rajasthan’s Balotra; 8 detained

At Samdari village in Rajasthan's Balotra on Friday, a 32-year-old married woman was allegedly paraded naked by about ten people who accused her of having an extramarital affair, according to police. Following the release of a video of the incident on social media, the survivor filed a complaint, leading to the detention of eight people on Saturday, two of whom were women.

The woman was traveling somewhere on Friday when she was abruptly attacked by the group—all of her neighbors—on the road, according to the police. Superintendent of police Kundan Kawaria claimed that after they had beaten her, they had also paraded her through the village in her undies.

A rumored social media video of the incident appeared to show her being dragged nude down the road by three to four people, while another woman verbally and physically attacked her. A statement from one of the accused stated that they would inform the woman's father about her extramarital romance with a married man in the hamlet over the phone. Not shown on the video, there were a couple other persons involved in the incident as well. According to Kawaria, we are also attempting to identify the individual who took the video.

Following the video's Saturday viral discovery on social media, police responded on their own initiative. The SP claimed that once we approached the woman right away and forced her to make a formal first information report (FIR), we apprehended eight persons.

A case was filed under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 509 (insulting the modesty of a woman), 498 (enticing or taking away a married woman), 354 A (punishment for a man who engages in unwelcome and explicit sexual behavior), and 354B (assaulting or using criminal force to any woman with the intention of disrobing or forcing her to be naked), 342 (wrongful confinement), 294 (recites or utters obscene song or words), as well as pertinent sections of the IT Act.

Given the seriousness of the situation, police have also established a special investigative team (SIT), which is led by Neeraj Sharma, the deputy superintendent of police (DSP) for Siwana. In addition, the woman is receiving psychological counseling. We are asking the accused why they attacked in the first place. The SP stated that more investigation is in progress.
