Jharkhand court rejects Hemant Soren’s bail plea to attend uncle’s funeral

A Jharkhand court denied former chief minister Hemant Soren's request for provisional bail on Saturday, Soren had moved the court earlier in the day, citing his uncle's passing. According to a lawyer, Soren petitioned the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court for 13 days of provisional bail so he could attend his uncle Raja Ram Soren's burial and last rites, who passed away this morning.

Pradeep Chandra, Soren's attorney, stated, "The court denied bail despite the filing of an interim bail petition." A hearing on the petition, which Soren had already filed, is scheduled for May 1. In addition, he had appealed his arrest through a special leave petition to the Supreme Court, where a hearing is scheduled on April 29.

Since January 31, Soren has been detained by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case pertaining to 8.86 acres of tribal land in Bariatu. The PMLA court has received a prosecution complaint from ED against him, and the court has also taken notice of the case.
